Brittany Hannah, a Young Marines gunnery sergeant, is a member of the PFC Bruce W. Carter unit based in Doral. The 18-year-old was one of two Young Marines who was awarded the Jimmie Trimble Scholarship at the American Veterans Center in Washington, D.C., in November.
The $1,000 scholarship is named after James “Jimmie” Trimble III, a Marine who passed up the opportunity to play professional baseball to serve the United States during World War II. Trimble died age 19 during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945.
This spring, Hannah will have the opportunity to travel to both Guam and Iwo Jima to attend the 70th anniversary of the battle.
“I feel honored to be traveling on this once-in-a-lifetime trip,” Hannah said. “It’s exciting to know that I’m going to be in such a unique place with so many of our nations heroes.”
