A University of Miami assistant women's basketball coach was driving a car that struck and killed a man Sunday morning in Coral Gables.
Guillermo Castano Campanioni was crossing 37th Avenue west to east about 3:15 a.m. when he was hit by a car driven by Octavia La Dawn Blue, according to police. Blue was driving south on 37th Avenue through the Miracle Mile intersection and had a green light, police said.
Campanioni died at the scene.
Blue remained at the crash scene and cooperated with police. There was no indication that Blue was impaired, according to police.
Chris Yandle, a spokesman for the University of Miami Hurricanes, released a statement to the Miami Herald about the accident.
“The University of Miami and Octavia Blue, a member of our women's basketball staff, express our sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Guillermo Campanioni,” he wrote in an email. “No words can bring true comfort to those who loved Mr. Campanioni, but our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time.”
Police continued their investigation Sunday.
