Council approves Bal Harbour Shops funding of expansion application process

Bal Harbour has approved a resolution requiring the Bal Harbour Shops to fund an application process as the high-end mall looks to expand.

Bal Harbour has approved a resolution requiring the Bal Harbour Shops to fund an application process as the high-end mall looks to expand.

On Tuesday, the Village Council approved a resolution that would require the mall to fund $150,000 for the application process.

“The review of the plans are going to require a level of expertise and professional skills that we don’t have at the village like traffic engineers or economic appraisers,” Village Manager Jorge Gonzalez said in a phone interview. “The resolution secures that the shops agree they must pay the village’s expenses that review.”

The Bal Harbour Shops wants to expand and it could cost about $300 million.

The mall wants to add 350,000 square feet of retail space, including 250,000 square feet of additional or expanded specialty department store space, and at least 20 retail boutiques, along with a high-end theater, a multipurpose community plaza along Collins Avenue and multiple locations for public green space. It would also build a new, 61,000-square-foot church for its neighbor, the Church by the Sea, on a site behind Village Hall.

Gonzalez said any money not spent will be reimbursed. He also added that the Shops has submitted the plans and a partial of the application.
