A man in a white Chrysler led police on a half-hour “Bullitt”-like chase across major highways, main thoroughfares and residential North Dade neighborhood streets, sometimes against traffic, before crashing into a Miami Gardens Police Department SUV Monday afternoon.
Police arrested 24-year-old Antonio Jackson after the half-hour chase, according to Herald news partner CBS4, which broadcast the pursuit live from a helicopter.
According to the Miami-Dade Police Department, the chase began when Miami-Dade officers responded to a report of an assault with a firearm involving the driver. They found the Chrysler as it followed a Miami-Dade bus down 79th Street. When officers tried to stop the Chrysler at Northwest 79th Street and 27th Avenue, the driver refused to stop.
With media and law enforcement helicopters following, the Chrysler raced to Interstate 95, onto the Turnpike, and through Miami Gardens residential neighborhoods. Almost miraculously, no one was seriously injured before the car struck the police SUV at Northwest 183rd Street and Fifth Court. The driver threw himself onto the ground as police swarmed.
Miami Gardens Police Department is now investigating the discharge of an officer’s firearm during the confrontation, according to CBS4.
