A Miami-Dade police officer shot a 44-year-old man Monday night in northwest Miami-Dade after the man failed to stop his Toyota Camry despite repeated commands, police confirmed.
The shooting happened at about 7:30 p.m. at Northwest 90th Street and Northwest 26th Avenue.
Police said officers attempted to pull over Trejo Perez after noticing “suspicious activity.” The officers exited their car, but Perez failed to completely stop, said Miami-Dade police spokeswoman Jennifer Capote.
“The driver made a move as if he was reaching for something,” Capote said.
One of the two officers opened fire. It was not clear how many shots were fired.
“They feared for their safety,” Capote said.
Perez was taken to Ryder Trauma Center. His condition was not known late Monday night, Capote said.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate.
