Chapman Awards honor impact on downtown

“We’ve arrived at the beginning all over again,’’ noted keynote speaker Alberto Ibarguen, president and CEO of the Knight Foundation, as he introduced the inaugural Alvah H. Chapman Award of Excellence honoring significant contribution to the development of Miami’s original — and renewed — downtown center. The awards, bestowed Wednesday by the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce, are named for the late Knight-Ridder chairman and one-time chamber chairman known his vision and leadership.
Receiving the first-year honors were Brian Alonso of La Epoca Department Store in the Young Leader category, Miami Dade College in the Organization category and former Miami mayor Manny Diaz in the Individual category.
