An attempted car theft by two men in the parking lot of a Kmart in Northeast Miami-Dade backfired on Thursday when a third man showed up and shot at the pair, police said.
One of the men was arrested on grand theft auto charges. His friend is in the hospital nursing his wounds. Miami-Dade police said charges are pending.
The man who fired the bullet got away.
Miami-Dade police said Daniel Martinez, 19, and Samuel Kontorosvky, 18, drove a stolen vehicle into the Kmart parking lot at 10700 Biscayne Blvd. at 12:30 a.m. Thursday. They were attempting to steal another car when a man whom they said they did not know approached them and began firing.
Never miss a local story.
Martinez was shot. But he and Kontorosvky managed to get back in the stolen red, four-door Honda Civic they had arrived in, and they drove off.
They didn’t get far.
Martinez, driving with a bullet wound in his back, lost control of the car after leaving the parking lot and crashed into a tree.
He then hopped out of the car and banged on the door of a home, asking for help, while his partner stayed near the car and flagged down a police officer.
Martinez was airlifted to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Police say he is in stable condition.
Kontorosvky was charged with grand theft auto.
And police are looking for the man who shot Martinez.
