A 24-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a violent stabbing that left an 85-year-old man dead and his 68-year-old partner severely injured.
It was not immediately clear whether victims Rodolfo Pavon and Maria Rivero Carrillo were married, but police have identified the pair as a couple.
Carrillo is in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.
According to Miami Herald news partner CBS4, suspect Armando Colon is dating the granddaughter of one of the victims. A police report indicates that the victims knew Colon. He has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and armed burglary.
Police say Colon used drugs early Wednesday, then visited the couple’s apartment, at 1559 NW North River Dr., around 7:15 a.m. He asked for water, and Pavon invited him in. The suspect stayed at the apartment for a few minutes and left.
After arriving home, he told police he decided to take more drugs and walked back to the victims’ apartment.
Colon knocked on the door, but no one answered. Then, the report says, he forced the door open and attacked Pavon, who was sitting on the couch, and slashed his throat open.
He then stabbed Carillo — who is bedridden — in the head. Colon put a shirt over his head so potential witnesses wouldn’t be able to identify him and went home.
Police arrested him after interviewing witnesses and examining the crime scene.
Miami Police spokeswoman Kenia Reyes says investigators suspect that Colon was hoping to burglarize the home. He is being held without bond.
