A 6-year-old girl saved herself from a sex offender by screaming for help as he tried to kidnap her, according to Miami-Dade Police.

The child, whose name has not been released, was attending a summer camp last week at the Dave and Mary Alper Jewish Community Center when Dean Beck, 39, approached and tried to drag her into the men’s restroom.

It was not clear how Beck, a registered sex offender, got to the summer camp area. The center’s gym is open to the public.

Records show Beck was arrested in 2002 on charges of possession of child pornography, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Ed Rosen, director of the community center at 11155 SW 112th Ave., said a counselor saw what was happening and police officers excercising at the center’s gym responded immediately.

The girl was not injured and returned to camp the girl Thursday afternoon following the incident.

When asked about the alleged kidnapper, Rosen said the suspect is a special needs adult.

“The gentleman in question has an intellectual disability,” he said.

Investigators now are trying to determine whether Beck has victimized other children, said Miami-Dade Police spokesman Roy Rutland. Anyone with information about Beck is asked to contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.
