Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez’s communications director is leaving County Hall to return to Florida International University.

As of Monday, Fernando Figueredo, who has managed the county’s communications staff for 2 ½ years, will become FIU’s director of career services.

“I have often said that it is not only FIU’s responsibility to prepare our students to enter the workforce, but it is also the responsibility of our business community to participate in that process,” Figueredo said Tuesday in an email.

The move marks a homecoming for Figueredo, who took a leave of absence from the university to join Gimenez’s fledgling administration. Figueredo had previously chaired FIU’s advertising and public relations department.

In the role of communications director, Figueredo was part of the mayor’s executive team, helping him shape his public message.
