A suspicious fire started in a mattress at a nursing home early Wednesday morning in Northeast Miami-Dade has been referred to the Miami-Dade Police Department for investigation, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said.
Three residents of the Sinai Plaza Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, 201 NE 112th St., were taken to the hospital, according to Lt. Arnold Piedrahita, a spokesman with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.
One resident was taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while the other two “had medical conditions that were agitated by the whole stress of being evacuated,’’ Piedrahita said.
A fire truck was near the nursing home when the 911 call went out and was able to respond quickly. The damage was contained to one room of the facility, which is near Barry University.
“There were 51 patients,’’ said Piedrahita, who credited nursing home staff for a successful evacuation of the residents.
“They were repatriated shortly after we ventilated the home. There was minimal damage,’’ he said.
