Miami Beach has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement to review the police department’s investigation into the death of 18-year-old graffiti artist Israel Hernandez-Llach.
Hernandez-Llach died early Tuesday morning after being shocked with a taser by a Miami Beach police officer.
The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner’s Office also are reviewing the case, according to a Miami Beach news release.
“I have complete confidence in the integrity and capacity of the Miami Beach Police Department to conduct a fair and thorough investigation,” said Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales in the news release. “But the role of the FDLE will provide further assurance to the public of the thoroughness and transparency of the investigation.”
Hernandez-Llach was killed at about 5 a.m. Tuesday after officers saw him painting on an abandoned McDonald’s, according to police.
Police said he led officers on a foot chase, then ran towards them after being told to stop.
Officer Jorge Mercado fired his stun-gun at the teen, who died soon after.
Mercado was placed on paid administrative leave Thursday.
Morales said the City of Miami Beach would not comment on specific findings of the investigations while they are underway.
The medical examiner’s office review could take six to eight weeks, he said.
