There are a few ways to look at the 25-year prison sentence handed down to South Miami-Dade resident Zeddrick Smith in federal court on Friday.
There’s the view that it’s 4.17 years for each of the six November and December robberies — two Farm Stores, two Domino’s Pizza joints, a Burger King and a Dairy Queen — to which Smith pleaded guilty in March. Or, that it’s 3.125 years per count if you add to the six robberies one count of possession of a firearm in a violent crime and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Broken down still another way, Smith’s earlier 13-year, seven-month incarceration for unlawful firearms transport means the 46-year-old has spent more than half his adult life in federal prison.
Should he serve all 25 years of this sentence, he’ll have been a forced guest of the federal government for approximately 77.2 percent of his adult life.
Four of Smith’s robberies were worth $1,529 in cash. The other two amounts weren’t stated in court documents.
