Just before the stroke of midnight — when she dropped in her gigantic red shoe from above Duval Street in Key West — drag queen Sushi and her longtime partner became one of the last same-sex couples to marry in 2015.
“I can’t believe this was one of the last same-sex marriages of 2015, and I was honored to do it in the shoe,” said Sushi (real name Gary Marion), who married longtime partner Jeff Kucin late Thursday night. “And I’m so happy that we have the right to do this — especially for drag queens.”
It’s been exactly one year since marriage equality came to Florida.
Marion said in a news release that he and Kucin waited years to be legally wed: “My husband asked me to get married about five years ago, but I told him I would not go to any other state until it was legal all over America. So I waited.”
Never miss a local story.
Sushi is the “Grand Dame of Drag” at 801 Bourbon Bar on Duval Street. Like the ball dropping in Times Square, it’s become a New Year’s Eve tradition in Key West as Sushi drops at midnight inside her red shoe from above the bar.
