Dr. Ruth Westheimer will speak with fans Wednesday night at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center’s Orlove Auditorium in Davie. The event is presented by Temple Beth Israel of Sunrise.
“The opportunity to have Dr. Ruth speak to our community presented itself through the generosity of CardioMas. We are delighted to have Dr. Ruth coming to our community for this amazing event,” said Rabbi Hector Epelbaum, spiritual leader of Temple Beth Israel, in a news release.
Dr. Ruth is best known for her pioneering TV show, “Sexually Speaking,” which aired on NBC TV. She became a 1980s cultural icon, appearing on shows such as “Hollywood Squares,” and authoring a string of bestselling books about sex.
Westheimer was born in Germany in 1928 and at age 10 was sent to a children’s home in Switzerland to escape the Holocaust. At 17, she went to Israel and helped fight for the Jewish nation’s independence.
“As a rabbi and father of three myself, I know first hand how hard it can be to speak about sex in general and about sex from a Jewish perspective,” Epelbaum said. “And what better person to tackle a hard topic then someone who escaped the Holocaust, joined the Haganah in Jerusalem and was badly wounded in action by an exploding shell during the Israeli War of Independence in 1948; and who fought hard for months so that she could walk again to help and inspire millions with her teachings and example.”
