After his arrest in Miami-Dade County, a Keys man returned to Monroe County Wednesday to face an attempted murder charge.
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office deputies say Yordan Alvarez, 26, hit a man, 39-year-old Oleimys Abal Celemente, in the neck with a broken bottle on Feb. 7. Celemente told police he was visiting his sister’s house on Big Coppitt Key when Alvarez attacked him with the bottle. Alvarez hit him so hard on the head with the bottle that it broke, cutting Celemente’s forehead. Alvarez then slashed Celemente’s throat as his brother, Amaury Alvarez, punched Celemente in the face, police say.
Celemente’s sister told police she came outside and saw her brother on the ground and the two men running away. She recognized both men, police said, because they were living on the same property as her at the time of the attack.
Celemente was airlifted to Jackson Memorial’s Ryder Trauma Center for the laceration on his neck. He has since recovered, police said.
Never miss a local story.
Alvarez was arrested in Miami-Dade County Monday, and police brought him to Monroe County Wednesday. His brother, Amaury, had been arrested March 19 in Hernando County on an outstanding warrant for battery in connection with the attack.
Police charged Alvarez with one count of attempted murder. He is being held in the Monroe County Jail on a $50,000 bond.
