A 71-year-old man was killed Thursday night after an “intense” fire burned up his home on Big Pine Key, deputies said.
The blaze at his home, at Mile Marker 31 on Avenue B, was reported to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office at 9:11 p.m. Four minutes later, a deputy responded to the scene and attempted to enter the home, but the fire and smoke were too strong, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Monroe County firefighters arrived minutes later and quickly extinguished the fire. The man was already dead.
The State Fire Marshall and the Sheriff’s Office are investigating.

“All agencies involved will be working together to determine the cause of the fire as well as the cause of the death,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
The man’s name will be released upon notification of his next of kin.
