An independent photographer and a second victim were seriously injured Tuesday when gas fumes ignited during a photo shoot that used candles and an inoperable car as the backdrop.
The explosion and fire happened at about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday at a salvage yard at 2731 NW 19th St. in Fort Lauderdale.
Fort Lauderdale Deputy Fire Chief Timothy Heiser said the man and woman were inside the “shell of a car” when the explosion happened.
“People need to be aware that anytime you are operating around gas or fuel fumes, any open flame or ignition source will lead to this kind of tragedy,” Heiser said.

Both the man and woman, who have not been identified, were taken to Broward Health Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Heiser said both had burns throughout their bodies.
Fort Lauderdale police did not release any other details about the incident, saying it is under investigation.
