A Fort Lauderdale murder suspect who was shot dead by police at a Days Inn early Wednesday has been identified.
Henry Kiner III, 27, was involved in a shootout with Broward Sheriff’s Office deputies, Fort Lauderdale police and U.S. Marshals shortly after midnight at the 1500 block of West Oakland Park Boulevard. Officers were attempting to take Kiner into custody when he came out of a hotel room with a shotgun and opened fire. The officers shot back, and Kiner was killed at the scene.
BSO homicide detectives are investigating the incident and have placed six of their deputies on administrative assignment, per their office’s policy.
Another man, Junior Fletcher, 28, was arrested on unrelated narcotics charges after officers approached him as he was leaving the parking lot in a black truck. Investigators said that Kiner told Fletcher on Tuesday night, “this is the last time you’re going to see me.”
Both men were released from prison in 2011 after serving prison sentences for robbery charges, Kiner for an armed robbery in 2006 and Fletcher for a robbery in 2002.
A Broward sheriff’s deputy and a hotel guest were injured in the shootout, but no one else at the scene was injured.
The deputy injured his arm, but was not shot, and was taken to Broward Health Medical Center where he was treated and released. The hotel guest, Daniel Forrest, 21, was not seriously injured after being shot, according to BSO deputies.
Kiner was wanted in the Aug. 11 murder of Deerfield Beach resident Corey Pratter, 26, according to Fort Lauderdale Police.
Pratter was killed after leaving a club to meet with friends on the 100 block of Florida Avenue at about 4:30 a.m. Police say Kiner approached the victim and fired multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
