A four-day boil water warning in Broward County was lifted Saturday afternoon, after days of testing water samples came up clean.

The boil-water order was first issued Wednesday morning, after a routine monthly test found E. coli bacteria in one of eight county wells that supplies water to Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, Dania Beach, West Park, Pembroke Park, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, parts of Davie and unincorporated South Broward County.

More than 87,000 water customers were affected.

Residents and businesses had to use bottled water or boil their tap water, even for common needs like making coffee and brushing their teeth.

The contaminated well, five feet under the ground in Brian Piccolo Park in Cooper City, was retested and came up clean two days in a row.

Meanwhile, the well has been cut off from the county’s water system until the Broward Health Department knows exactly what caused the problem.

“At this point in time, all we’ve done is mechanically and electrically disconnected it,” said Terry Karda, operations director for Broward County Water and Wastewater. “We’ll have to wait for the inspection next week to find out more.”

The working theory is the well probably picked up the bacterium when heavy rains flooded parts of Broward County last Friday, he said.

The raw groundwater in the well would have been filtered, cleaned and chlorinated in the county’s treatment plants before it was pumped out to local homes and businesses, Karda said, but the county issued the boil-water order as a precaution.
