An accident on Florida’s Turnpike left one man dead late Saturday afternoon after the semi-tractor trailer he was driving turned over, according Florida Highway Patrol officials.

The man, who had not yet been identified, was driving eastbound on the Homestead extension of Florida’s Turnpike, FHP spokesman Sgt. Mark Wysockey said.

When he tried to exit onto the main turnpike the truck flipped over and the truck’s cab burst into flames.

He died on scene.

A series of explosions from the accident shook the walls of a few homes in a nearby Miramar neighborhood, residents say.

“Our house shook twice and then there were three more that happened over the next 10 to 15 minutes,” said Trinity Trisolino, who lives northwest of the Turnpike on Acapulco Drive.

Black plumes of smoke could be seen for miles while traffic on the ramp to the main turnpike moved slowly.

“Probably within ten minutes you heard sirens,” Trisolino said. As firefighters extinguished the blaze the smog dissipated.

It was not immediately clear what caused the truck, which was carrying fruit, to turn on its side, troopers said.
