Jimmy Jones tried to swim toward the embankment after he lost control of his Ford Ranger truck and drove into a Lauderdale Lakes canal Thursday morning.
But Jones, 60, didn’t make it.
Broward Sheriff’s Office divers plucked Jones from the Middle River Canal. He was taken to the Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
According to BSO, Jones was heading westbound on Northwest 39th Street near 31st Avenue around 10 a.m. Thursday when he apparently lost control. The pickup turned left sharply and crossed over the eastbound lanes and into the grass swale and eventually into the canal.
Never miss a local story.
Witnesses told deputies that Jones was able to get out of his truck, but slipped under the water before reaching the shoreline. A Good Samaritan jumped into the canal to try to save him.
It did not appear that any other vehicles were involved in the accident, according to BSO.
