Brush fire contained at Alafia River State Park
The Associated Press
LITHIA, Fla. -- Crews have contained a brush fire in Alafia River State Park that burned through about 500 acres of land in eastern Hillsborough County.
According to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue spokesman Ray Yeakley, the fire was under control by Monday morning, but it will likely continue to smolder. It was predominantly located in the state park, and did not threaten any structures or campers.
Yeakley said the fire was two separate blazes that were about a half-mile apart. No injuries were reported.
The terrain made it difficult for crews from Hillsborough Fire Rescue and Florida Division of Forestry. Fire Rescue says it is common to find deep phosphate pits on the land, which also has "radical elevation changes."
