Woman fatally shot by father while cleaning guns

The Associated Press

Tampa police say a father helping his 32-year-old daughter clean a gun after target shooting accidentally fired the weapon and killed her.

According to the police department, Melissa Kupferberg died at a hospital Saturday afternoon after being shot in the upper body.

Police believe the shooting was an accident.

The father, identified as 65-year-old Stephen Kupferberg, was visiting from Maryland. Police said he was trying to tear down the gun for his daughter when it went off.

No charges have been filed. Phone messages and an e-mail left Sunday for the police spokesperson were not immediately returned.
