Shalala using crutch
BY JOAN FLEISCHMAN

University of Miami President Donna Shalala has been hobbling on a crutch, the result of a recent operation to repair a torn meniscus in her right knee. Shalala, 68, hurt herself during a round of golf -- she twisted her leg while swinging.
Shalala declined to say where she was playing or with whom.
Dr. Lee Kaplan, sports medicine chief at UM's Miller School of Medicine, performed the 30-minute arthroscopic surgery on Aug. 13 at University of Miami Hospital. She returned to work the next day and is in physical therapy.
Shalala appeared crutch-less on stage Friday at BankUnited Center on the UM campus when she introduced columnist George Will, who spoke to new students.
A busy time at Shalala's school, with classes beginning Wednesday. Plus, Madam Prez is teaching a course for upperclassmen -- The Politics of Education. Shalala has serious political experience. She served in Bill Clinton's Cabinet as secretary of health and human services.
Don't look for Shalala on the golf course or tennis court any time soon -- no sports for a few months.
