Shaq's Star Island pad sold for $16 million

joanfleischman@yahoo.com

NBA star Shaquille O'Neal got $16 million for his mansion on Miami Beach's Star Island, according to a posting on the Multiple Listing Service. O'Neal paid $18.8 million for the property in August '04. He'd been trying to unload the 2.45-acre estate for four years, asking a high of $35 million to a recent low of $22.5 million.

Still no ID on the buyer who scored the house, unfurnished, at a deep discount. Buyer's agent is listed as PhilipFreedman. He is a broker with Flagstone Realty of Miami.

The new owner -- reportedly a European businessman -- also has a luxury condo on the Beach, and will continue to reside there until he renovates the seven-bedroom main house. A cash deal, with no mortgage.

O'Neal, a former Miami Heat center who was traded to the Suns last year, may soon be looking for a new home near Cleveland. He is reportedly about to be traded again -- to the Cavaliers.
