Marcos Brito has joined City National Bank as senior corporate banking relationship manager. He will be based in the bank’s Las Olas office in Fort Lauderdale. He most recently was a senior vice president, corporate banking with BBVA Compass. Brito has a bachelor’s in finance from Florida International University.
Danita Nias has been named vice president for institutional advancement at Florida Atlantic University and chief executive officer of the Florida Atlantic University Foundation, and she will begin her new role by the end of October. She most recently was senior associate vice president for external affairs at the University of Florida. Nias has a bachelor’s with a concentration in personnel and labor relations from the University of Maryland and a master’s of social science with a concentration in international relations from Syracuse University.
Dr. Yazmin Odia has been named lead physician of medical neuro-oncology at Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist health South Florida. She is the only board-certified neuro-oncologist in practice south of Orlando. She previously was assistant professor of neurology at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons and an assistant attending neurologist at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Her educational background includes a medical degree from the University of Chicago.
Ruben Diaz will join Hughes Hubbard & Reed as partner in the firm’s Miami office. He will co-chair the Latin America practice for the firm, which is based in New York. Previously, he was general counsel of Grupo Pellas, a conglomerate of financial, industrial and commercial companies based primarily in Central America. Diaz has a bachelor of arts from Princeton and a J.D. from the University of Chicago.
Brian K. Gart has been named a partner at Akerman, based in Fort Lauderdale, in the bankruptcy and reorganization practice group. He was previously managing director and general counsel of New York-based investment bank Gordian Group. Gart, a past chair of the Florida Bar Business Law Section, received his bachelor’s and J.D. degrees from the University of Miami.
▪ George Whitehouse has been named director of business development. Most recently, he was director of business development with MTN Satellite Communications in Miramar. Whitehouse has also captained superyachts and has managed complex yacht builds and marina/harbor construction projects. He is a graduate of SUNY-Cortland.
▪ William Alejandro has been named controller. He previously was a contractor at Protiviti, and before that, CFO of Amzak Capital Management in Boca Raton. Alejandro, a CPA, has a bachelor’s in business administration from the University of Puerto Rico.
Jenifer Sacks has rejoined the Sun Sentinel Media Group’s advertising division as director of digital operations and development. She was previously Florida digital operations manager for tronc, Sun Sentinel Media Group’s parent company, for three years. Sacks has a bachelor’s in advertising and communications from Penn State University.
Jonathan Babicka has been appointed executive director of the Little Lighthouse Foundation in Miami. Previously he was president and director of operations of PhilanTropic Lifestyle. Babicka has a bachelor’s in communications from the University of Pittsburgh.
Lisa Jesmer has been promoted to senior vice president of investor client accounts at Franklin Street. She previously was vice president of management services for the industrial and office division, and before that, was at CBRE. Jesmer has a bachelor’s of engineering from Rochester Institute of Technology.
