Copa Airlines launched new service between Fort Lauderdale and Panama City, Panama on Friday.

The Panama-based airline will offer four nonstop flights a week between the two cities.

Joe Mohan, Copa’s senior vice president of commercial and planning, said the airline originally didn’t see a need to add service in Broward because it already flies five times a day to Miami.

But after the airport, business community and tourism bureau in Broward made a pitch that the markets were totally different, Mohan said the airline realized there was growth opportunity.

“What we believed is we could stimulate a whole different market that wasn’t being serviced from our Miami flights,” he said.

The flights, on a 124-seat Boeing 737-700, will be operated on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Broward already had service to Panama three times a week on Spirit Airlines.
