Spirit Airlines offering free miles to “haters”

Spirit Airlines is encouraging passengers to vent about air travel — and offering free miles as an olive branch.
The ultra low-cost carrier said this week that it will give away 8,000 miles to anyone who submits up to 140 characters of vitriol, frustration, praise or other sentiments at HateThousandMiles.com. Miramar-based Spirit will give away up to a total of one billion miles.
“Airlines mess up – but at least Spirit Airlines is willing to admit it,” the website says. “We haven’t been great about telling you how we fly. We want to be better.”
The campaign is part of Spirit’s new effort to “hug the haters” and better communicate its business model of offering low base fares and charging fees for everything from picking a seat to putting a bag in the overhead compartment.
