The Miami Coast Guard station is helping in the search for a cruise ship crew member who fell overboard early Wednesday.
The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on the Celebrity Constellation, which sails from Fort Lauderdale to the Caribbean. The cruise ship was in the area of the Yucatan Channel when the crew member fell.
He has been identified as Inyoman Bagiada, 45, from Indonesia, who worked as a cook. It’s unclear how or why he fell.
Helicopters and cutters are searching for the man. According to the Coast Guard, the cruise did not report Bagiada missing until 10 a.m., hours after he fell overboard.
Never miss a local story.
The cruise line says a pair of shoes were found next to a deck railing, and a review of closed-circuit camera footage showed “a person going overboard.” Officials said the ship’s location at the time the person went overboard was then reported to the Coast Guard. A spokeswoman for the cruise line said the man had already been in the water for a few hours once camera footage revealed what had happened.
The ship was returning from Cozumel, Mexico, to Port Everglades after a five-day cruise.
It resumed its journey once the Coast Guard search began.
