Broward after-school programs offer something for everyone

Before Renee and Chris Zapata sent their 5-year-old to kindergarten this year, one of their chief concerns was what would happen when classes were over.
Without the right after-school program, ``I'd be in a real bind,'' said Renee, a Pembroke Pines hairdresser. ``I wouldn't be able to work as hard as I do.''
The Zapatas were able to find a Pembroke Pines academy that picks up their son from his elementary school every afternoon.
In Broward County's public schools, there are more than 23,000 children being served in 170 before- and after-school programs, which are either district-operated or run by a private provider. The cost runs between $163 and $196 for 20 days of service, said Deborah Gavilan, coordinator of Before and After School Child Care Programs for Broward Schools.
But parents are faced with a growing number of options once the bell rings -- from programs heavily focused on academics to ones offering activities as varied as cheerleading and rock climbing.
With so many alternatives, how do you determine the program that's right for your family? Many parents turn to recommendations from friends, family members, nearby youth centers, or local churches and synagogues, but Gavilan said there is no substitute for doing your own homework.
``You really need to go in. Talk to the person in charge, look at the certifications and really decide if it is the right program for your child,'' she said. ``If it is not working out at any time, find another program.''
Typically, programs provide transportation from local schools to their centers so parents can remain on the job. Once the children are settled, there are snacks, help with homework and fun activities.
Most programs are available for early-release days and school closures, but some may be closed for major holidays.
Two key issues are whether the cost and the hours of operation match your family's needs, Gavilan said. If not, keep looking. You'll want to check a center's licensing and certifications, ratio of staff to children, the curriculum and activities, the quality of their personnel and whether they show an understanding and interest in your child's specific needs.
``Is there time for the children to have down time, or relaxation time to go outside, as well as complete their homework?'' Gavilan said.
There are also plenty of after-school classes and activities for parents who aren't looking for a daily, structured program.
Here's a roundup of some of Broward's after-school providers, a mix of traditional choices as well as enrichment classes:
