Group to offer gambling addicts free treatment

With a $300,000 grant from the Seminole Tribe, a nonprofit organization plans to begin a free treatment program for gambling addicts.

The Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling announced its plans Tuesday at the Florida Gaming Summit, which is based at the Seminole-owned Hard Rock Hotel and Casino near Hollywood.

The council has not settled on where to locate its first four treatment centers, but its president, Paul Ashe, said one would open in South Florida before year's end.

The council receives state funding for outreach programs across Florida, as well as for training programs for doctors to deal with addiction. The state funding prohibits any money from going toward treatment.

Ashe said he hoped the Seminoles' grant would encourage the Florida Legislature to follow suit.
