Water use restrictions are eased -- not removed

Rules for water use were relaxed Friday, giving most South Floridians a second day to sprinkle lawns and gardens.
The South Florida Water Management District decided last week to lift severe once-weekly restrictions after several weeks of rain replenished groundwater supplies and stabilized water levels in Lake Okeechobee.
The lake has dropped slightly since then. It fell to 10.42 feet above sea level on Thursday, about 3.6 feet below normal but still a few inches above last year's record-setting lows.
The new rules allow watering at odd-numbered addresses on Wednesdays and Saturdays, even-numbered addresses on Thursdays and Sundays. There are two watering periods each day -- midnight to 10 a.m. or 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. The restrictions apply to all water sources, including lakes, canals and private wells.
There are no restrictions on washing cars or boats.
