TAMARAC

Tie vote on annexation leaves Tamarac in a quandary

Sun Sentinel

A day after Tamarac's election, city officials were still trying to figure out what to do about an annexation vote that ended in a dead heat.

Five voters Tuesday wanted the unincorporated Prospect Bend neighborhood to become part of Tamarac; five did not. The other 130 eligible voters sat it out.

The vote, a do-over from 2008 when not a single Prospect Bend resident went to the polls, threw city and election officials into a tizzy. Hours after the final count, city officials, elections officials and attorneys traded a flurry of text messages and telephone calls. On Wednesday, the question remained unresolved.

``At this point, we pull back, retrench and look at our options,'' said city spokesman Andy Berns. ``I don't know what our legal options are.''

Berns said the issue would probably be sent to the Legislature. The state has mandated annexation for all of Broward County's unincorporated areas by next year.

``It was our hope the people would have their say, but 10 votes out of 140 was merely a whisper,'' Berns said Wednesday.

``We remain interested in the area and would like to welcome the residents and businesses to our city.''

Whatever happens next will not be yet another vote, he said.
