Cop shoots man in Fort Lauderdale

dmoskovitz@MiamiHerald.com

An off-duty Fort Lauderdale police officer was involved in a shooting Wednesday afternoon that left two men injured near a downtown bus station, authorities said.

Details were sketchy, but the officer was working security at the bus station shortly after 1 p.m. when he was told of a nearby confrontation involving an armed man, Fort Lauderdale police spokesman Sgt. Frank Sousa said.

The man suspected of being armed was shot by the sergeant and stumbled a short distance before collapsing.

That man was taken to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he underwent surgery.

The second man, who wasn't a part of the initial confrontation, had less serious injuries.

Police found a weapon but did not release any details about it. They also would not say how the second person was shot.

Neither the name of the officer nor the names of the men shot were released.
