NORTH LAUDERDALE - Incumbent Mayor Jack Brady sailed back into office Tuesday night, defeating challenger Bruce Tumin.
Brady, who has served on the city commission since 1988, campaigned on the promise of attracting business to the city.
"Thank God," Brady said Tuesday as he heard of his landslide victory, 744 votes to 128. Brady, 67, a retired school teacher, made the rounds of all nine polling places beginning at 6:45 a.m. "Vote on past experience. I had military experience, he's had none," Brady told voters at the polls.
Brady's home computer was broken Tuesday night, so he relied on residents calling him with periodic updates on the election as the votes trickled in.
"I give 100 percent to the people and they know they can count on me," said Brady late Tuesday. "I love all my residents. They are family to me."
Tumin's political career began in 2002, when he was elected to the city commission. He became vice mayor in 2004 but lost his seat in 2006 when fewer than 200 residents went to the polls.
The 51-year-old civil engineer said city officials don't spend money responsibly. He gave as an example replacing sidewalks that are not damaged.
In recent days he complained his campaign signs were vandalized and stolen, and that his arrest last month in his neighborhood on charges of trespassing, public intoxication and resisting arrest without violence was politically motivated. He said a court date has not been scheduled yet.
Commissioners Gary Frankel and John Cangemi were re-elected without opposition.
