POLICE REPORT

Robbers pick wrong man in Sunrise

Officers dispatched on a ``shots fired'' call arrived in the Sawgrass Mills mall, 12801 W. Sunrise Blvd. in Sunrise, at 12:32 a.m. Oct. 18 after many citizens had dialed 911.

They found a 30-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman. The man said they had just left the movie theater when he saw two men ``suspiciously'' walking behind them.

As he unlocked his car, one of the men ran toward him. When they got into the car and locked it, the robber began to hit the driver's window with his fist and pulled on the door handle while the other man stood about 50 feet back acting as a lookout.

The victim said he feared for his life when he saw the man reaching into his waistband so he opened his glove compartment, pulled out his Heckler & Koch P30 pistol, opened the door and fired five shots at the robber in self-defense.

The robber ran back toward a black two-door Honda while still trying to remove something from his waistband. The victim said he still feared for his life and fired a few more shots.

Both robbers left in a Honda with the victim behind them. He told police he tried to get a tag number but finally lost sight of the Honda.

His concealed weapons permit was valid.
