    Highlights of Huck: Revisiting Mark Twain's Legendary River Rides: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the West Regional Library, 8601 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, and 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale. The presentation will explore Twain's influences while living and working on the Mississippi River and Twain's significant contribution to American literature.

    State schools gain popularity as families weigh their options at the annual college fair in Fort Lauderdale.

11/07/09 --  Fort Lauderdale --  Broward Center for the Book at Broward County Library is hosting The Big Read through Dec. 13 featuring Mark Twain's literary classic The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Sixty-five events at locations countywide are set to bring  adventures in reading to more than 6,000 children, teens and adults. Here, banjo player Pat Hacket, of Boca Raton, plays a 1903 ditty,  Ida Sweet as Apple Cider, with the Gold Coast Jazz Society's Dixieland Band on opening day at Broward Main Library.

11/02/09 -- Hollywood --  John Kosmac, a stroke patient at Memorial Hospital South in Hollywood, and physcial therapist Ximena Tapia, get ready to read as  Memorial's newest employee Liz, a service dog, opens a book shelf door at the hospital's Determination Drive rehabilitation center. Liz works full days responding to commands that assist patients in getting healthy, strong and back to performing daily functions such as walking to the mailbox or going grocery shopping before being released from the hospital.

    There's a four-legged employee at a Hollywood hospital that patients are turning to for help with recovery and daily activities.

11/07/09 -- Pembroke Park --  Stephanie Ruiz, of Pembroke Pines, and Linda Socci, of Coral Springs, handle tons of donated canned goods during a sorting blitz by 200 volunteers from JM Family Enterprises at Feeding South Florida's Pembrpoke Park warehouse. The food distribution program, formerly Daily Bread Food Bank, recently lost 93,000 pounds of food during a fire at their former location.
