    2 men attacked in Miramar holdups

    A 39-year-old man told police he was out for a ``leisurely'' walk in the 8200 block of Southwest 25th Court in Miramar when four men approached him about midnight Oct. 23. He kept walking, but they followed.

11/04/09 -- North Lauderdale --  Vietnam War veteran retired Lieutenant Colonel Connie Christensen, president of Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 23 in Fort Lauderdale touches the name of her deceased  friend Lt. Richard Buzzzell on the  240-foot-long, 8-foot-tall Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall in North Lauderdale. Buzzell was killed in action in 1970.

    Here are some events taking place this week:

    Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall: The Dignity Memorial Vietnam Wall is open for public viewing Sunday at Bailey Memorial Gardens, 7801 Bailey Rd., North Lauderdale. Closing ceremonies for the exhibit will include remarks by local dignitaries and veterans, a concert by a symphonic band, a 21-gun salute, taps and retiring the colors. The event will begin at 3 p.m.; free and open to the public. For more information on the wall, visit dignitymemorial.com.

11/30/08 - Plantation - Residents can make Christmas brighter for a needy child through the Salvation Army's Angel Tree program. Angel Trees are located in Broward Mall in Plantation and Pembroke Lakes Mall in Pembroke Pines. Here, each angel represents a needy child and their gift wish.

    Earning some extra credit wound up leading to an extra special bonus for 13-year-old Alex Puertas.

    The Pembroke Pines teen was one of three winners of Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest. As result, he will receive a four-year Florida Prepaid College Scholarship. The scholarship, established by the Governor's Office in 2003, is presented to students in elementary, middle and high school levels who compose outstanding essays.
