Women can network, share their business expertise, maybe even find a mentor at the Davie-Cooper City Chamber of Commerce's third annual Women's Empowerment Luncheon.

Set for 11:30 a.m. Oct. 23 at the Signature Grand in Davie, the event aims to pull together businesswomen and give them an opportunity to learn from each other, event chairwoman Diane Grant said.

''Women network differently than men do,'' she said. ``This event gives them the opportunity to meet other women, network and do business.''

The keynote speaker is Nancy Olson, executive director of the Florida Marlins Community Foundation.

''She will empower women in the community by telling about all of the community organizations she's involved in and how you can make a difference,'' Grant said.

A portion of the event proceeds will benefit the Davie Boys and Girls Club, where Olson serves on the board of directors.

Organizers hope the event, sponsored by Nova Southeastern University, also attracts college women, Grant said.

''This is an opportunity for women just entering the work force,'' she said. ``We want to teach them how to network and get involved.''

About 150 people are expected at the event, which evolved from a chamber committee Grant started three years ago to give women networking opportunities.

Since then, the committee has sponsored seminars about caregiver support and identity theft and is planning a fitness workshop for early next year, she said.

For the luncheon, the committee aims to choose an inspiring keynote speaker. Last year's speaker, breast oncologist Dr. Sandra Franco, made a big difference in at least one member's life.

About six months after the luncheon, Grant said the member approached her and said because of the event, she discovered a tumor and was undergoing treatment.

''I got goose bumps when she told me,'' Grant said.

Luncheon tickets cost $35 and must be bought by Friday. Call the chamber office at 954-581-0790.
