Robert Ray Huizenga moves to wipe tears from his eye, as he reads a letter to the judge and apologizes to the man he struck during his felony DUI sentencing in 2006.
The stepson of Miami Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga will no longer be confined to his home because of DUI arrests, a Broward judge ruled Friday.
Robert Ray Huizenga was serving a year on house arrest after his third arrest for driving under the influence in 2003, but Judge Michael Kaplan decided to shorten the sentence after 202 days. Huizenga still has four years of probation, but the eased restrictions will now allow him to travel with his father, who he has started working with on business dealings with the Dolphins.
Huizenga will still be required to submit to urine and breath tests to ensure he hasn't had any alcohol or drugs as part of the conditions of his release from jail after serving a four-month sentence that began in October.
Huizenga was attempting to make a left turn on Dec. 5, 2003, when he drove into the path of a 71-year-old man, who suffered head and leg injuries, according to police reports. He refused a blood/breath test, but pleaded no contest to the charges in 2006.
