Rescuers plucked a drunken man from the Atlantic Ocean about 50 miles east of Boca Raton early Monday after he jumped several stories from a cruise ship, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
Scott Durrin, 29, of Rockville, Md., plunged about 40 feet from a deck of the Carnival cruise ship Liberty into the water just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday, according to the Coast Guard. The ship's captain told the Coast Guard Durrin might have jumped.
The agency launched a helicopter from its Miami station and notified a rescue cutter about nine miles from the cruise ship. The crew of the Liberty, meanwhile, tossed life jackets and flotation rings overboard to Durrin.
The Coast Guard crews spotted Durrin within minutes and rescued him at 12:22 a.m. Monday. He was intoxicated, the Coast Guard reported. The agency did not say whether Durrin was being taken for medical treatment.
The Liberty had departed from Port Everglades about 4 p.m. Sunday. It was unclear if the incident would disrupt the ship's itinerary.
