Two killed in I-75 crash near Weston

dmoskovitz@MiamiHerald.com

Two people died after the BMW they were in drifted into a ditch, rolled over and crashed on Interstate 75 on Thursday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Grace Ariella Astacio, 28, of Southwest Miami-Dade County, and Ana Carolina Astacio-Sloan, 30, of Round Lake Beach, Ill., both died at the scene, FHP said. No other vehicles were involved.

It was shortly before midnight when Astacio was driving the 2003 BMW southbound on I-75, just past the exit for Royal Palm Boulevard, FHP said. The BMW drifted into the grass median, then hit a drainage ditch and rolled over.

The impact threw Astacio-Sloan from the vehicle, FHP said. A passing motorist stopped and pulled Astacio from the BMW, which later became engulfed in flames, FHP said.

Investigators are still trying to determine what caused the BMW to drift into the median.
