Starting Thursday, free wireless Internet will be available on a limited number of Metrorail and Metrobus routes.
Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez will debut the new system at 11 a.m. in a ceremony at the Palmetto Station at 7701 NW 79th Ave., the county announced Wednesday. The county has not yet said which routes will allow riders to surf the Web for free.
The new wireless access is part of a larger plan to make the county as Internet-friendly as possible. In 2006, Alvarez said he wanted the entire county to have free wireless access in two years. Those plans were significantly scaled down over time, primarily because of cost and privacy concerns.
The county currently offers free Wi-Fi at four parks: Amelia Earhart, 401 E. 65th St., Hialeah; Goulds, 11350 SW 216th St.; Tamiami, 11201 Coral Way; and Tropical, 7900 Bird Rd.
