Starting Dec. 13, a new bus route will connect Miami International Airport and South Beach -- a heavily traveled corridor used both by commuters and international tourists.
The announcement by Miami-Dade Transit chief Harpal Kapoor comes after El Nuevo Herald columnist criticized transit officials for not having such a route between the two locations.
Shoer Roth's column appeared in Spanish on Nov. 4 and in English Tuesday.
In an interview with El Nuevo Herald, however, Kapoor said the newspaper column had nothing to do with starting the route.
``It has been in the works for a long time,'' said Kapoor. ``Just like the express buses on Interstate 95.''
That service is scheduled to begin early next year between downtown Miami and Fort Lauderdale, using the toll express lanes on I-95.
Trips from MIA to Miami Beach will cost $2.35 and take about 30 minutes, according to Kapoor.
