Two people were killed Friday morning after their speeding white Porsche went out of control, smashed into a guardrail and plunged into a canal.

The crash, just before 2 a.m., closed eastbound State Road 836 at LeJeune Road for more than four hours hours.

Joe Sanchez of the Florida Highway Patrol said the car was traveling at "a high rate of speed."

The car crossed several lanes, traveled 500 feet and split the guardrail in half on impact, Sanchez said.

FHP reopened the stretch of 836 just before 7 a.m., in time to get cars moving for the morning commuting rush.

Police divers found one man inside the car and another in the water, said Miami Fire-Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll. One of the men died on impact, the other died in the hospital.

Crews pulled the car from the water after 6 a.m. and the road opened an hour later.

This bulletin will be updated as more information becomes available.
