Inflation hits 36 percent in Hugo Chávez's capital
Associated Press
CARACAS -- Venezuela's Central Bank says the annual inflation rate has hit 36 percent in the Caracas metropolitan area as food prices soared.
Inflation in the Venezuelan capital for September was up from 34.5 percent in August.
The Central Bank has not been releasing annual inflation figures for the whole country since adopting a new method of measuring inflation earlier this year.
Monthly inflation reached 2 percent in September nationwide according to Tuesday's figures, up from 1.8 percent in August.
Prices for goods and services, health and restaurants also showed strong gains. Inflation in the oil-producing nation is rising as demand outpaces supply.
Venezuela has the highest official inflation rate in Latin America.
