Guyana miners rip up roads in search for gold
Associated Press
GEORGETOWN, Guyana -- Guyana authorities say miners in a southwestern jungle town are ripping up roadways in search for gold.
The local mines commission says it is preparing to chase the unlicensed miners from the town of Mahdia near the border with Brazil. Another group there cut water service to thousands last year by severing underground pipes.
The South American country's official GINA news agency said Wednesday that the miners have been excavating roads at night and leaving deep trenches.
Local authorities banned errant miners from the area last year and seized more than a dozen land dredges. But regional administrators say a new band of miners appears to have taken their place.
