Learn to grow your own veggies

With the price of food cutting deeper into household budgets, growing vegetables at home doesn't seem like a far-fetched idea to many. Indeed, in an August Action Line webvote, a majority of respondents (53 percent) said they would consider growing their own veggies due to the rising cost of food.

If you'd like to give it a shot, Miami-Dade's Cooperative Extension Division is offering a how-to class on vegetable gardening on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon at the Deering Estate (16701 SW 72nd Ave.). The class costs $20 (checks only), including publications, and will cover techniques including raised-bed gardening and organic pest management.

To register for the class, call 305-248-3311, x225. For directions to the Deering Estate, call 305-235-1668 or see deeringestate.com.
