Viewer disagrees with Comcast on Spanish ads

[Regarding Action Line, Sept. 27], a reader wrote to you asking why some English channels have ads in Spanish, referring to Comcast television broadcasting.

As a Miami resident, what's happening is concerning me, and even more so after reading the response of Comcast area Vice President Ian Dennett.

He attempted to be politically correct in his response but failed greatly. He says ``airing Spanish-speaking commercials in English programming is regarded as fitting into the normal standards of the community's life and culture of Miami.''

The standards he is mentioning are directed only toward the Latino bilingual community. It is not standard to the general population as a whole. His excuse to the situation totally disregards the English speaking and non-Latino community of Miami.

When I came to this country I did not speak a word of English. I spoke French only.

Even though I understand Spanish well enough, I am personally insulted by the Comcast vice president's response.

My friend who is Chinese watches DirecTV in Chinese, lives within the Miami community and does not get Spanish commercials in her broadcasting, only Chinese.

My parents get Dish Network and watch their French channel TV5 Monde and there are no commercials in Spanish there either.

I want to thank Mr. Causey for his question to Action Line. As a result, I will make sure not to ever use Comcast.
